Coffee creamer that is anything but actual cream.

Yes, black coffee would be the easiest way to avoid chemical additives with your cup o’ Joe.  But some people just can bet on black!  They need a little something to soften the cup o’ Joe.

A friend of mine posted a link to a recipe for home made flavored coffee creamer.  The photo called for using flavored syrups with sweetened condensed milk, and compared that to the chemical bomb in Coffeemate’s bottled creamers.  Well, the flavored syrups also have their fair share of chemicals.

Which describes a dairy milk based recipe with using sweetened condensed milk, but not far off from my coconut cream based version.  Sweetened condensed milk is regular dairy milk which has been evaporated and sweetened with sugar.  At this point, you’ve likely read in this blog or in facebook posts how I feel about added sugars.  I have a coconut cream based recipe that is a healthier alternative to the bottled creamers and even the homemade version – especially if you’re diary free or watching added sugar.

Coconut Cream: Take a can of full fat coconut milk (available at any grocery store). Turn it upside down and place it in the refrigerator a few hours or overnight. Turn it right side up, open the can and pour off the water (you can save and drink it if you want, but separate it from the cream). Turn the can over and open the “bottom” side and scrape out the coconut cream into a bowl.

  • Add 1-2 teaspoons of honey, beat it with a mixer until whipped cream consistency. I won’t be big firm peaks, but you’ll see.
  • Flavor with any of the following: 1/2 t vanilla or almon extract, 1/4 t cinnamon, 1t unsweetened cocoa powder

Coconut cream is delicious, but the additional benefit of adding it to your coffee is that the fat in the coconut milk slows the caffeine absorption and softens the java JOLT – think smoother, long lasting buzzzzzz.
